This ancient range acts as our ultimate ecological shield, buffering the region against desertification and purifying our atmosphere. At the Amrita Devi Foundation, we view restoration as a necessity for survival, not merely an environmental choice. Our mission—restoring 500 native trees to this fragile landscape—is a blueprint for how we can reclaim our environmental health.Key Insight Tree survival is the frontline of SDG 13 (Climate Action) . By ensuring a sapling survives to maturity, we create a permanent carbon sink that filters harmful PM 2.5 and PM 10 particles, cools our cities, and secures our groundwater for the next generation.Restoring an ecosystem is a marathon, not a sprint. The real work begins after the pit is dug, requiring a transition from the vision of a forest to the disciplined, technical labor of silvicultural maintenance.


2. The Survival Blueprint: Essential Maintenance Activities In the harsh, gravelly terrain of the Aravallis, a "set it and forget it" approach leads to a 0% survival rate. 3. Smart Watering and Heatwave Tactics In a landscape where water is scarce, our team utilizes "precision irrigation" to maximize every drop. The strategy must be fluid, shifting with the intensity of the sun to ensure we aren't just wetting the surface, but deeply hydrating the root zone.

● Standard Care: For most of the year, a twice-weekly deep-soaking schedule provides sufficient moisture.

● Heatwave Care (May–June): When temperatures skyrocket above 45°C, we escalate to thrice-weekly watering.

● Smart Scheduling: We avoid watering during the peak heat of the day. A common beginner error is midday watering, which can actually "cook" the roots as the soil temperature rises.

We schedule irrigation to combat the rapid evaporation caused by the region's notorious hot winds.Proper hydration is the foundation, but without a healthy soil structure to hold that water, our efforts would literally evaporate.


4. Soil Enrichment: The Power of Mulching and Compost The Aravalli soil is notoriously difficult—predominantly gravelly and alkaline. For non-native species, this is a death sentence. To give our native saplings a fighting chance, we focus on aggressive soil conditioning.The Triple Benefit of Organic Mulching (Applied to 80% of Saplings): 1. 2. 3. Critical Moisture Retention: In rocky soil, water drains almost instantly. Mulch creates a barrier that slows this process significantly. Thermal Regulation: Mulch acts as an insulator, protecting the delicate root system from the extreme heat of the Aravalli stone. Nutrient Cycling: As mulch breaks down, it helps lower the alkalinity of the soil over time.We supplement this with bi-monthly applications of natural compost and manure, providing the organic matter necessary for roots to anchor into the deep, rocky sublayers.


5. Organic Protection: Weeds and Pest Management Native trees like Papri and Harshingar are perfectly adapted to the climate, but they can still fall victim to localized threats. We maintain a strict weeding cycle every 20-30 days to ensure our saplings are not crowded out by invasive scrub.However, the greatest biological threat in the Aravallis is often the termite. We’ve observed a specific irony in ecological restoration: while organic mulch is necessary for moisture, in very dry conditions, it can occasionally harbor termites that then move to the sapling. Constant vigilance and organic treatment are the only solutions.Pro-Tip: The Power of Neem We exclusively use Neem-based pesticides every 45 days. This natural solution effectively manages termites and infections in species like Papri and Harshingar without poisoning the soil or the local bird populations that we are trying to attract back to the hills.


6. Case Study: Overcoming the Challenges of the Aravalli Hills Achieving a 70% survival rate in this landscape is a triumph of perseverance over nature's extremes and human apathy.

● Harsh Climatic Conditions: Temperatures exceeding 45°C and hot winds create a "desiccator effect" that few young plants can survive without intervention.

● Gravelly, Alkaline Soil: The rocky sublayers make root anchoring a physical struggle for every new plant.

● Grazing and Disturbance: Stray cattle, squirrels, and unauthorized wood collection require us to be more than just planters; we must be protectors.

● The "Perception" Barrier: Initially, many locals believed "plants will die anyway." Overcoming this fatalism through education was as vital as the watering itself.

● Logistical Rigor: In a terrain where vehicles cannot go, our teams manually carry manure and water uphill, proving that restoration is built on physical labor.
